The Roles of Lipids at Coral Biomineralisation and the consequences of Future Climate Change
Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems and therefore are of significant economic significance concerning fisheries, tourism and coastal security.
Knowing the coral biomineralisation process is critical to forecasting the consequences of raising seawater temperatures and pCO2 (e.g. sea acidification) on potential reef growth.
So far, most research in this field has researched how anthropogenic changes in seawater has an effect on the precipitation of aragonite, the calcium carbonate mineral utilized to construct the coral skeleton.
Nevertheless, coral skeletons are composite substances made up of both aragonite and natural substances such as sugars, proteins and lipids. Very little is known about the functions of biomolecules from the precipitation procedure or how these will be impacted by climate change.
Skeletal lipids are regulated by sterols and phospholipids and the latter could bind Ca2+ and behave as templates for CaCO3 deposition. Lipids extracted from coral skeletons impact the crystal morphology and porosity of both calcite (another type of calcium carbonate) precipitated in vitro but the molecules responsible for that are unresolved.

Research how skeletal lipids influence aragonite precipitation. The student will utilize devices in Dr Allison’s laboratory to precipitate aragonites in vitro under closely controlled conditions. They’ll determine how distinct lipids influence the growth rate and crystal morphology of aragonite.
The student will create approaches to deposit the lipids for research on the beginning aragonite seed crystals and also to make sure they remain stable throughout the precipitation. Similar techniques are developed in bone search but are not yet been implemented from the wider biomineralisation field.
The student will ascertain quantitatively how the lipid compositions of coral skeletons are influenced by both raising seawater pCO2 and temperature with the coral samples previously.
